Registering a foreign birth with El Salvador

El Salvador’s Foreign Ministry provides routes for recording births and other family-status events that occurred abroad. Applicants outside the country generally work through a Salvadoran diplomatic or consular representation; applicants in El Salvador can ask the Ministry’s regional offices about the current process.

Choose the receiving office first.

The receiving office determines the appointment method and any local handling requirements. Contact it before ordering duplicate records or paying for authentication.

Reconcile the file before submission.

Compare parent names on the foreign birth record with the Salvadoran birth and identity documents. Ask the office how a discrepancy must be corrected or documented rather than relying on an informal explanation.
